Moving toward unified communications - Pave the way for the future with Adobe® Connect 8
The communications technology industry has been working toward a vision of unified communications (UC) in which voice, video, and data services truly converge on a single, shared IP-based infrastructure. The ability to receive all types of communication, independent of the means used to send or access it, will open up a new world of productivity and real-time collaboration in the office and beyond. In the world of web conferencing, UC will make it possible to provide integrated high-quality audio, video, and data interactivity, live or recorded, to a large group without latency.
To that end, Adobe has released Adobe Connect 8, featuring Universal Voice, with new capabilities that enable two-way audio among all participants, whether connected via Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) or via a third-party conference bridge, and third-party video integration.

Gender And Transnational Migration: Social Networks And The Forging Of Alliances
In this paper, the author wants to raise some issues about individual and collective transformatory experience, in particular how the seemingly 'Powerless' carve out spaces of control through the forging of social networks and vital political alliances. At the beginning of the 1980's debates within feminism shifted quite markedly towards an acknowledgement of the complex interactions between categories of class, 'Race' and gender and the identities that they give rise to. But this recognition of the range of difference and diversity spawned its own problems.

Moving "On Their Own" - Mobility Strategies And Social Networks Of Migrant Women From Maghreb In Italy
Recent years have witnessed profound changes in migratory trends in the Mediterranean. Some aspects of these transformations are of particular interest, as they testify to the participation of this area in a new "Age of migration" (Castles, Miller, 1998). Indeed, the Mediterranean has experienced both a social diversification and a spatial differentiation of migratory movements. Spatial mobility, in particular back-and-forth movements, have intensified as a consequence of the globalisation of economies and due to the rise of transnational communities (Simon, 1990). Besides, during the last thirty years, Mediterranean countries, which were traditionally countries of transit and/or emigration also became receiving countries.

Monopoly Provision Of Tune-Ins
This paper analyzes a single television station's choice of airing tune-ins (preview advertisements). The author considers two consecutive programs located along a unit line. Potential viewers know the earlier program but are uncertain about the later one. The TV station may air a fully informative tune-in during the first program. The cost of the tune-in is the forgone advertising revenue. Under mild conditions, there exists a unique perfect Bayesian equilibrium in which some viewers watch the first program just to see if there is a tune-in or not, and the TV station airs a tune-in unless the two programs are too dissimilar.

Network Stability, Network Externalities And Technology Adoption
This paper investigates how the destabilizing of a social network may increase the scope of network externalities, using data on sales of a video-calling system made to an investment bank's employees and subsequent usage by these customers. The terrorist attacks of 2001 led potential customers in New York to start communicating with a new and less predictable set of people when their work teams were reorganized as a result of the physical displacement that resulted from the attacks. This did not happen in other comparable cities.

FORRESTER: The Total Economic Impact Of Migrating A Heterogeneous Database Environment to IBM DB2 For SAP And Non-SAP Environments, April 2011
The purpose of this study is to provide readers with a framework to evaluate the potential financial impact of IBM DB2 on their organizations. This study illustrates the financial impact of adopting IBM DB2 for both SAP and non-SAP applications based on aggregated findings of customers that migrated to DB2 from a variety of legacy database platforms. In conducting in-depth interviews with five global organizations using IBM DB2 both within SAP and non-SAP environments, Forrester found examples of how DB2 delivered key benefits both inside and outside of IT within three key benefit areas: reduced cost of administration, improved operational expenses, reduced storage cost "Based on data from five DB2 customers, Forrester found the ROI for a representative organization is 192% with a breakeven point (payback period) of 12 months."

The Case for Database Conversion
Migrating applications to a new database can be expensive and daunting, especially if significant changes are required within the applications themselves. The most common challenges encountered include lack of staffing, scalability issues, security concerns, and knowledge of legacy systems -- which is sometimes scarce. Still, the benefits of converting to a new database can outweigh the costs, but only if the process is managed very carefully. Register for this Information Management Webcast to learn from the experts about best practices for determining when a conversion makes sense, and for executing the transition carefully and thoroughly. Noel Yuhanna of Forrester Research will offer his insights on how to map out an effective migration roadmap, such that few if any surprises crop up down the road. An IBM executive will also present an overview of Big Blue's technologies for Sybase application conversion to DB2.

IBM Smart Analytics Systems vs Oracle Exadata X2-2 (Bloor Research)
Philip Howard, IT analyst with Bloor Research in the U.K., provides a comprehensive comparison of IBM and Oracle systems for data warehousing. In his review, he examines many aspects of IBM Smart Analytics System and Oracle Exadata 2-2 to determine which approach (Oracle's one-size-fits-all vs IBM's workload optimization) is best. His conclusion: "When we commenced this exercise we expected to find that there were some areas in which IBM excelled and others in which Oracle did so. We have been surprised to find that that is not the case and that the IBM Smart Analytics System out-competes Oracle Exadata in almost every area we have examined."

Oracle to IBM: A Customer's Journey - D+H Webcast
An InformationWeek webcast With over 4500 employees in over 20 locations, D+H offers a diverse set of solutions including cheque programs, lending solutions, student loan processing, and registry services. In this webcast, D+H will share the key differences between the IBM and Oracle solution offerings, customer experiences, and the tangible business benefits of their evolving relationship with IBM, from vendor & customer to strategic partner.
For example, D+H will share how they were motivated by a 2000% increase in the price of Oracle's SunONE Application server to make the move away from Oracle. In their extensive evaluation of WebSphere Application Server (WAS) and JBOSS, WAS won because of the superior support and functionality of the IBM offering, along with the familiarity of IBM in the marketplace. D+H selected IBM DataPower for its simplicity, programmability, relative cost, performance, security, SOAP/REST and industry standards support, and proven features.
As Paul Lewis, D+H's VP of Technology & Architecture states, "Beyond functionality and cost, support for our mission critical systems was a key factor in our decision making process and IBM has demonstrated a long term commitment to the technologies we're building our business on."
